Is Brake Fluid the Same for All Vehicles?

Is Brake Fluid the Same for All Vehicles?

Brake fluid is a hydraulic fluid that ensures the smooth operation of your braking system. Brake fluid works using hydraulic pressure to allow the calipers and brake pads to grasp your brake discs. Your brake fluid needs to be able to withstand high pressures and extreme temperatures, and the limits for this fluid varies depending on their DOT rating. In other words, brake fluid is not universal and not all the same. Though most DOT fluids are either glycol-based brake fluids or silicone-based, they can have different properties and characteristics. DOT fluid can differ in color, price, and resistance levels to temperatures. Below are the differentiation between DOT 3,4,5 and 5.1: DOT 3 - glycol-based  yellow or amber color the lowest boiling point between the four (401° F dry boiling point and 284° F wet boiling point) affordable DOT 4 -  commonly used in foreign vehicles  glycol-based  higher boiling point than DOT 3  dry boiling point ... read more
